I Am Performance Marketing: The Budget Savvy Bride’s Jessica Bishop

Jessica Bishop

Jessica Bishop lives in New York City and is the editor and owner of TheBudgetSavvyBride.com. The Budget Savvy Bride has become the #1 resource for couples planning a budget wedding.

Jessica has worked in various aspects the wedding industry for over 9 years – from design and day-of-coordination to photography and wedding invitations, she’s handled it all! Jessica is also the resident Weddings Expert for About.com.

In conducting this first I Am Performance Marketing feature profile, I asked Jessica some questions about her job and professional life. In particular, I wanted to know what she thinks of our industry and how she is using performance marketing. With The Budget Savvy Bride, Jessica is focused on serving brides and grooms, DIY and craft lovers, and of course, brands who are looking to reach thrifty-minded, soon-to-be-married people. Let’s dive in…

When asked to describe what she does, Jessica highlights what she views as her role in helping people. “I create content to inspire, empower, inform and equip brides and grooms.” She helps them plan their “beautiful wedding on a budget they can afford.” Regarding The Budget Savvy Bride, she loves to share “creative ideas, doable DIY projects, affordable resources, practical advice and insight from real couples.” In everything she does, a beautiful wedding on a budget remains the goal.

i-am-performance-marketing-logo-affiliate-v3bAs a member of the performance marketing industry, Jessica pointed out that she spends a lot of time “connecting with brands and businesses to build mutually beneficial relationships on an affiliate basis.” The Budget Savvy Bride has access to an audience that many brands are trying to reach. This produces an opportunity for a symbiotic relationship: “I love integrating their products and services into our content in a way that is natural and beneficial to both the brand and the end user.”

Getting her start in the performance marketing industry is an interesting story. Jessica pointed out that she shifted gears “as the landscape of online advertising” changed. With banner ads on the decline, “I decided to explore performance marketing as an option to make up for that loss in revenue.” That’s all it took years ago. In fact, she found performance marketing a “more natural and integrated way to feature sponsors” on The Budget Savvy Bride.

Thinking ahead to the future of the performance marketing industry, Jessica feels that the growth of the last few years suggest that this form of marketing is “only going to continue to grow.” This bodes well for her love of the performance marketing industry and its practitioners. “I’ve met some really great people in various roles within the industry.” Furthermore, she’s quick to add that “the relationships I’ve built are definitely an asset in my work.”

As an innovator and one who seeks to push the envelope within the industry, Jessica feels that one of the best things she can do is to focus on “creating unique, original and engaging content that features products we’d actually recommend.” The key to doing this is to present them in a “natural and organic way” that doesn’t distract from the site’s goals.

When asked for one thing that people within the industry would be surprised to know about her, Jessica’s response will surprise many – The Budget Savvy Bride is an almost solo-operation: “I have one part time assistant but for the most part I handle everything for my site!” That means “from the content calendar to the billing to the photoshoots,” it’s all Jessica!

Finally, to sum our industry up in just three words, Jessica believes that performance marketing is the “future of advertising.” And with innovators like Jessica Bishop leading the way, we couldn’t agree more.
